CREAMS

A cream may be prescribed as it has a few advantages over other forms of drug delivery.  A hormonal cream is to be applied to an unexposed area of the body (as it allows the best absorption). Before application, place a small amount on the inside of the arm and leave for about 5 minutes. If you find that there is no reaction (the skin is not red or irritated) then you may proceed with the application. Apply as directed by the doctor and discontinue use if there is a reaction to the cream (very rare).

CAPSULES

Capsules can be manufactured according to your needs. Once a script is written for a capsule dosage form, the pharmacist can tailor the specifc dose to the specifications on the prescription. Although ineffective with progesterone, oestriol and DHEA can be compounded in capsule form for easy oral administration.

TROCHES

The Troche is a form of drug delivery that is similar to a lozenge. It is a small (10mmx10mm) lozenge that is placed between the cheek and gum and allowed to dissolve (without swallowing whole).  Troches contain the natural hormone in a base that can be easily cut into 1/2’s and 1/4’s. The usual dose is 1/2 or 1/4 of a troche up to twice daily (refer to your personal prescription for your recommended dose). They may take up to 40 mins to dissolve, but is usual sped up by having a hot drink prior to your dose. Do not eat or go to sleep with a troche as it will be wasted.

Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place, away from light. In summer it is best to keep in the refrigerator.
